Long-haul flights can be a daunting experience when traveling with toddlers, especially when it comes to keeping them entertained and comfortable. In this blog post, we will share valuable tips, fun activities, and explore the use of toddler beds to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey for both your child and yourself.
Prepare a special surprise bag filled with new toys, activities, snacks, and don't forget to include a few comfort items such as a favourite blanket or stuffed animal. Introduce items from the bag gradually during the flight to maintain your child's interest and excitement.
Interactive books, such as touch-and feel or lift-the-flap books, can provide hours of entertainment for toddlers. Choose books that align with their interests and include engaging elements that allow them to explore and interact with the story. These books can be a great source of comfort and familiarity during the flight.
While it's important to limit screen time, long-haul flights can be an exception. Load a tablet or smartphone with age-appropriate apps, games, and educational content. Remember to bring child-friendly headphones to ensure a comfortable and quiet experience for your toddler.
Take advantage of the limited space on the plane by engaging in interactive play with your child. Play simple games like "I Spy" or "Simon Says," or encourage them to use their imagination through storytelling or creating their own imaginary games. These activities not only keep them entertained but also promote bonding and creativity.
Snacks are an excellent way to keep toddlers occupied during the flight. Pack a variety of healthy snacks, such as bite-sized fruits, granola bars, or cheese sticks, to provide nutrition and entertainment. You can also include a few special treats as surprises throughout the journey to add excitement.
Prepare a busy bag or activity kit filled with age-appropriate toys, puzzles, and small games. Choose items that are compact, mess-free, and easily transportable. Activities like threading beads, magnetic puzzles, or Velcro building blocks can provide hours of entertainment while also enhancing fine motor skills.
Some airlines provide the option of using a toddler bed or bassinet for young children. These beds attach to the bulkhead wall in front of certain seats and provide a comfortable space for toddlers to sleep, play, or relax. Contact your airline in advance to inquire about the availability and guidelines for using a toddler bed on the plane.
Long-haul flights with toddlers can be made more enjoyable and manageable by employing various strategies to keep them entertained and comfortable. By packing surprise bags, utilising interactive books and digital devices, engaging in interactive play, providing snacks, and using busy bags or activity kits, you can ensure your child remains engaged and occupied throughout the journey.
Additionally, considering the option of using a toddler bed on the plane can provide them with a comfortable space to rest and play. Remember to plan ahead, pack accordingly, and be flexible to accommodate your child's needs. With these tips and activities, your long-haul flight with a toddler can become a positive and enjoyable experience for the entire family.
Safe travels!

Chicken pox, caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), is a viral infection that can affect individuals of all ages. It is crucial to understand the signs and symptoms of chicken pox, particularly during pregnancy when the virus can pose additional risks. In this blog post, we will explore the signs, management strategies, and treatment options for chicken pox, with a focus on its impact during pregnancy.
Chicken pox is a highly contagious viral infection that typically affects children but can also occur in adults. The primary mode of transmission is through direct contact with an infected individual or exposure to respiratory droplets.
Rash:
The hallmark sign of chicken pox is a red, itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters. These blisters eventually crust over and form scabs.
Fever:
Many individuals with chicken pox experience a mild to moderate fever, particularly in the early stages of the illness.
Fatigue and Discomfort:
The accompanying symptoms may include fatigue, headache, body aches, and general malaise.
Isolation:
To prevent the spread of chicken pox, individuals with the infection should remain isolated until all the blisters have crusted over.
Comfort Measures:
Provide relief by using over-the-counter anti-itch lotions or creams, cool compresses, and loose-fitting clothing. Trimming nails and encouraging proper hand hygiene can reduce the risk of scratching and secondary infections.
Hydration and Rest:
Adequate hydration and rest are essential to support the body's healing process and overall well-being.
Over-the-Counter Medications:
Panadol or ibuprofen can help reduce fever and relieve discomfort. It is vital to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate dosage.
Antiviral Medications:
In certain cases, antiviral medications may be prescribed to pregnant women with severe symptoms or those at high risk of complications. The decision to use antiviral medications should be made in consultation with healthcare provider.
Pregnant women who have not had chicken pox or been vaccinated against it are at risk of contracting the infection. Contracting chicken pox during pregnancy can potentially lead to complications for both the mother and the unborn baby. In such cases, immediate medical attention is crucial to manage the situation and minimise risks.
The best way to protect against chicken pox during pregnancy is through vaccination. It is recommended that women who are planning to conceive or are not immune to chicken pox receive the varicella vaccine before pregnancy. If a pregnant woman is exposed to chicken pox, she should contact her healthcare provider promptly to assess the situation and determine appropriate measures.
Recognising the signs and symptoms, implementing effective management strategies, and seeking medical advice are essential for pregnant women and individuals of all ages. Vaccination before pregnancy and timely medical intervention in case of exposure can significantly reduce the risks associated with chicken pox. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance and care during pregnancy.

Sleep training for infants is an important and sometimes controversial topic for new parents. It is important to understand the various sleep training methods available and how to best use them for your baby’s individual needs.
The most common method of sleep training is known as “controlled crying.” This involves allowing your infant to cry for a certain period of time before intervening. The idea is to teach the baby that they can fall asleep independently, without the need for parental intervention. The amount of time babies are allowed to cry can vary depending on the age of the baby, the temperament of the baby, and the parents’ comfort level.
Another popular sleep training method is known as “graduated extinction.” This involves gradually decreasing the amount of time that parents are present in the room with the baby while they are trying to fall asleep. For example, parents may start by being in the room with the baby for a few minutes and then gradually reduce their presence in the room until the baby is able to fall asleep without their help.
A third sleep training method is “camping out.” This method involves parents sitting in the room with the baby while they are trying to fall asleep. Parents are not actively trying to help the baby fall asleep, but rather are present to provide comfort and reassurance. This method can help babies learn how to self-soothe and fall asleep independently.
Finally, “cry it out” is another sleep training method. This involves allowing the baby to cry for a set period of time before intervening. Parents are not actively trying to help the baby fall asleep, but rather are allowing the baby to work through the process of falling asleep on their own.
No matter which sleep training method you choose, it is important to be consistent and be patient. It may take some time and persistence before your baby is able to fall asleep on their own. It is also important to make sure that your baby’s other needs are being met during the sleep training process, such as ensuring that they are well-fed and have had enough physical activity during the day.
Sleep training can be a difficult process for parents and babies, but it can be beneficial for both in the long run. It is important to discuss the various sleep training methods with your paediatrician or general practitioner before starting any sleep training routine.

A crying, unsettled infant can be a new parents most challenging experience. As parents ourselves, we understand that constant crying can induce feelings of frustration and exhaustion. It’s important to understand that most infants experience periods of crying that starts at around 2 weeks and this can last until 4 months of age. It doesn’t necessarily mean that something is wrong with your infant, it is part of their growth and development.
Crying is an infants first point of communication.
They cry because they are hungry, wet, ill or bored.
Sometimes they even cry for no reason at all.
A continuous high- pitched cry (some people say ‘screaming’)
An infant that cannot be soothed (no periods of quiet)
When an infant arches their back when they cry
An infant with other symptoms such as temperature, diarrhoea, vomiting, cold and flu symptoms.
Difficulty breathing
A rash, or pale or blue skin
Poor feeding or little interest in food. Refused two feeds in a row.
Less amount of wet nappies

View DetailsViral illnesses are very common in infants, toddlers and children, especially when they start child care.
Young children are always touching and putting things into their mouths as they explore the world.
What if we were to tell you that good hand hygiene helped prevent the spread of these common illnesses in children?
Let’s have a look at why:
Viral illnesses can spread from an infectious person to another by contact. This contact can be from the vomit, saliva, nasal mucous and the stool from an infectious person.
Tiny droplets from coughing and sneezing from an unwell person are launched into the air and can land on surfaces or objects. This means that everyday items can easily become infectious.
If an unwell person doesn’t wash their hands properly after coughing, sneezing, going to the toilet, or even eating, then there is a chance that the germs will spread. This is because they are likely to touch items such as hand rails, door handles, toys, and mobile phones to name a few. This means that the next person to touch these items potentially can pick up the virus they unknowingly touch their mouth and nose.
Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and drying thoroughly is the best method. This should be done before handling food, after going to the toilet, touching soiled linen and changing nappies.
The Baby Bum Shower can be used to wash hands if you fill it up with warm water and soap. It can be used for 20 seconds and its convenience allows you to have hand washing available on the go. This ensures protection at any given time.
Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer can be used before and after touching surfaces as long as the hands are not soiled.
If your child is unwell and you are concerned, it's always recommended you consult a doctor for further specialised advice.

View DetailsAs parents, we understand that travelling with an infant can be stressful,
specially on long-haul flights.
1. The Baby Bum Shower
Cleaning dirty nappies whilst travelling abroad just became easier than ever! We like to think of the Baby Bum Shower as a portable shower. It is versatile and can be used for any messy situation. We recommend carrying an extra one for sticky hands and grubby faces.
Ever wished you could have a quick shower mid-flight? With the Baby Bum Shower in your baby bag, you can! Fill it up with water and soap and you will be feeling fresh and revived in seconds.
2. Travel Change Mat
Carrying one of these in your bag with the Baby Bum Shower, means you can change an infant or toddler anywhere.
The Baby Gear Easy Carry Change Mat is affordable and folds so it can be placed into your baby bag. We recommended investing in a user-friendly mat that can be wiped down and kept dry after each use. It also has pockets so you can access fresh nappies on demand without having them swimming around in your nappy bag. Easy-Peasy!
3. Travel Stroller
Do yourself a favour and take a small travel stroller like the Trip Stroller into the terminal with you. There is nothing more stressful than having an overstimulated toddler screaming on the floor of the waiting room to get onto the plane (yes, it has happened to both of us.) Our solution- Place your little one into the travel stroller and take them on long walks to explore the shops and watch the planes fly in.
If you’re lucky they may even fall asleep with the movement. Let the staff at the check in gate know you have your travel stroller with you and they will place it on the plane for you when you are ready to board!
4. Car Seat
Few people know this, but you can take a compatible car seat onto the plane with you. You will need to purchase a seat for your infant or toddler, order a child’s meal and notify the airline of the make and model of your car seat when your purchase your ticket. The car seat is easy to install onto the plane.
With the familiarity and comfort of the car seat, this will provide you with the space to enjoy your meal. Fingers crossed, you will be able to enjoy a movie in peace as your child falls asleep.
5. First Aid Kit
This is a must have for any parent travelling with children. Having an infant on a long-haul flight with a fever is any parent’s nightmare. Make sure you pack age appropriate supplies to deal with these unexpected situations. We suggest discussing travel medications with your doctor or local pharmacist.
You can also purchase a St. John’s Baby First Aid Kit which is a detachable baby change mat and First Aid Kit in one. Very convenient!
6. Earphones
Safe Volume Earphones for your toddler to listen to their favourite music, audio books or favourite tv show (yes, we are allowing screen time on the long-haul flight).
These are going to become your best friend during your flight as they are the gateway to entertainment and distraction. They can also be used on long car rides during your holiday.
7. The Very Busy Bag
These are popular and for good reason. The Very Busy
Bag has a range of goodies packed and ready to go to keep toddlers busy. Designed for travel, your child won’t be disappointed.
Our biggest tip is to give your toddler the bag on the plane. The excitement will be just like opening presents at Christmas time and will keep them distracted for ages!

You are NOT alone!
Many infants develop nappy rash at some point.
As parents, we understand the stress involved in knowing our bubs are
uncomfortable.
Today, we will highlight what a nappy rash is, and steps to prevent it from occurring.
So, what is nappy rash?
-Nappy rash, also identified as diaper dermatitis, is an irritation of the skin.
-It can present as redness, scaling, blisters, or papules (small pimple).
What causes nappy rash?
MANY aspects can contribute to nappy rash, such as:
-Infrequent nappy changes
-Diarrhoea- as acidity breaks down skin
-A variation in the infant’s diet such as when solid foods are offered
-Using antibiotics
-OR when breastfeeding mothers eat certain foods
How can YOU prevent nappy rash?
1. Change a nappy as soon it is dirty. We cannot stress this enough. The
longer the infant remains in a soiled nappy, the higher chance of the skin
becoming inflamed.
2. Use water to clean the skin during a nappy change. The Baby
Bum Shower makes this easy!
3. Allow the skin to air dry- the skin must avoid a moist environment as it will
delay healing.
4. Apply a barrier cream that contains zinc-oxide to protect the skin from the
irritants of urine and stools.
If you decide to use a baby wipes to clean the skin, please ensure it is unscented and contains no alcohol as this will make the rash worse.

But let's face it, real life is not always the same as an ideal world, and family mealtimes are no exception.
Many parents have to fight a small battle just to get their kids sit down and have a few bites of healthy food without having meltdowns. Mealtimes can unfortunately be one of the most stressful parts of the parenting experience.
Some children are fussy eaters, and it’s made more challenging when they decide they don’t want to eat certain foods that you know they used to enjoy. When you feel devoid of energy it’s often easy just to give up and give in to your childrens' demands for unhealthy food (no judgement here 😄).
If you’re the parent of a young toddler, we've got news; as kids' tastes develop they don't always stop being fussy eaters! You can try all kinds of tactics from bribery to banning TV time without success. Still your kids just get upset.
When you talk with other parents, you’ll undoubtedly find some comfort in the fact that you’re not alone with your mealtime meltdowns. Parents will often share their horror stories with you, and some might even seem extraordinary compared to yours. So what can we try to make mealtimes a little more enjoyable for everyone involved?
By now, you’re probably wondering whether you’ll just have to get used to several more years of stressful family mealtimes. The good news is there are some handy tips and tricks you can follow to make life easier for yourself. Check out the following mealtime parenting hacks; you’ll likely come across some
inspirational ideas that will work wonders in your household:
All children, even babies, need routines, and that includes having fixed mealtime routines. It makes sense to set mealtimes at specific times so kids can get used to when they will get main meals. If you’re looking for tips on how to make feeding a toddler easy, this is arguably one of the most important ones.
We love the idea of grooming younger children for mealtime with a healthy snack. A snack? Before mealtime? You bet, making a personal plate of fresh veggies and dips a pre-meal routine, helps get some nutrients into small tummies before you serve your actual meal. It's also gives partents more of a chance to relax without keeping kiddos hungry and waiting for food.
If you want to know how to feed a toddler or younger child without making the experience a nightmare, another top tip is to give them a five-minute warning before you serve their food on the dinner table. By doing this they’ll know they'll need to wrap up their current activities and get ready to have a meal.
Try easing children into a family mealtime by creating a transition to timetable. An activity tha involves getting ready to eat. For example, you can ask them to wash their hands before sitting down and explain to them the importance of good hygiene. You could even use the pre-meal time to work with your kids by helping them set the table. Even little ones can lay out napkins.
If you’ve got a dinner table, make sure you incorporate that into your mealtime routines and always sit at it to eat your meals with your kids. Not only is it a good idea for setting up routines, but it also makes your life easier if you’re
figuring out how to feed a baby without them causing a food explosion in the immediate area 🙃 The table creates a family space for shared time and expereince.
When you try to make your kids eat their food, it can cause the opposite to happen, along with lots of stress, frustration, and anger for everyone. Do yourself a favour and don’t force your children to eat their food. It gives them the option to “explore” what’s on their plate in their own time.
Plus, if you're worried about them not eating, a great trick is to add one or two items you know they’ll definitely eat, it means they won’t go hungry if they’re refusing to try anything else.
Lastly, you should set some dinner table rules. For example, you could say it’s okay to explore food with their fingers, but it’s not okay to spit their food out onto their plates or even on the floor. Have them ask to leave the table if they're talking or create a fun expereince with your family until everyone is finished.
Parenting young children is never an easy job. But, the above ideas will give you some inspiration to make mealtimes with them less stressful and even enjoyable for everyone involved.
Adjusting to Life With a Newborn: The Fourth Trimester
Disposable nappies are undoubtedly the first choice for many parents of babies and toddlers. They first came into use in the mid-20th century. Today, they have become the default option for many parents in much of the world.
All disposable nappies are made with a plastic outer layer and contain an inner layer manufactured with super-absorbent chemicals embedded in it. They’re typically available in all supermarkets, chemists, and retail stores that sell baby products.
One of the main draws of disposable nappies is how they’re available to buy in a range of different sizes and styles. What’s more, disposable nappies are often available to buy under supermarket own-brand labels, resulting in some cost savings to parents.
Another advantage is disposable nappies get sold in packs, ensuring an ample supply for most situations. Newborn babies usually need up to 12 nappies a day and up to eight for older babies and toddlers.
Perhaps the most significant disadvantage of disposable nappies is the fact they are disposable. There is no way of recycling disposable nappies, so they all end up going to landfill sites. Over 200 billion disposable nappies end up in Australian landfill sites each year.
Plus, a disposable nappy takes up to 500 years to break down. While it is possible to buy biodegradable disposable nappies, the rate they decompose will depend on landfill conditions.
Before the advent of disposable nappies, parents used cloth nappies on their babies and toddlers. Cloth nappies, as the name suggests, are nappies made from cloth. Most cloth nappies get manufactured from cotton, but alternatives are available like hemp or bamboo. Despite the popularity of disposable nappies, more parents are switching to cloth nappies for several reasons. Cloth nappies are available in several types, such as “terry” squares, pre-folded, fitted, and pocket styles, along with “all-in-one” types.
There are many benefits cloth nappies. For example, the primary advantage of cloth diapers is how they are reusable and don’t contribute to landfill waste as severely as disposable nappies.
Cloth nappies are available in different styles and sizes, the same as disposable nappies. Plus, they represent significant cost savings compared to disposables because of the fact they are reusable.
If you’re new to cloth nappies, one disadvantage you’ll notice is how you may not quickly change nappies as you do with disposable nappies.
However, preparing cloth nappies in advance can help reduce the steps needed when changing your baby’s nappies.
Another disadvantage is you need to wash and dry used nappies, meaning you’ll factor into your costs the electricity, water, and washing detergent you use. Thankfully, those costs are minimal. Also, some types of cloth nappies may make dressing your child more challenging.
If you’re a new parent, it makes sense to start with disposable nappies so you can get to grips with how to put them on your baby and take them off.
You might also consider using disposable nappies if you’re travelling somewhere far from home and don’t have any washing facilities at your destination or during your journey.
Otherwise, it makes sense to transition to cloth nappies because the benefits of using them geberally outweigh those of disposable nappies.
Are you keen to give cloth nappies a go but worry if they’re the right choice for you and your baby? A great option is to transition to them by using cloth nappies during the day and disposable nappies at night.
You will likely need around 20 or so nappies, to begin with, as you’ll need to factor in your washing and drying routines. When you’re happy that using cloth nappies is okay, you can then start using them on your baby at night as well.
Both disposable and cloth nappies have their pros and cons, but cloth nappies often make more sense for parents in the long term as they are a more sustainable solution.

‘Baby Bum Shower’ Recognised in Australia’s International Good Design Awards for Design Excellence.
The winners of Australia’s peak international design awards were announced today during the 2021 Good Design Awards Week. The Good Design Awards are the highest honour for design and innovation in the country and reward projects across 12 design disciplines and 30 subcategories.
Baby Bum Shower received a prestigious Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Product Design category in recognition for outstanding design and innovation.
The Australian Good Design Awards is the country’s oldest and most prestigious international awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. The Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian and international market, excellence in architectural design, precinct design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, and reward new and emerging areas of design including design strategy, social impact design, design research and up-and-coming design talent in the Next Gen category.
The 2021 Good Design Awards attracted a record number of submissions with 933 design projects evaluated by more than 70 Australian and international Jurors, including designers, engineers, architects and thought leaders. Each entry was evaluated according to a strict set of design evaluation criteria which includes good design, design innovation and design impact. Projects recognised with an Australian Good Design Award demonstrate excellence in professional design and highlight the impact a design-led approach has on business success and social and environmental outcomes.
The Good Design Awards Jury commented: “The landfill of baby wipes and disposable nappies are a massive cost to the earth, and the designers should be applauded for their effort to tackle this growing problem. The cute, sleek, efficient and hand-held ‘bidet’ minimises waste by reducing the number of wipes used to clean a baby. It's a simple but effective solution that will go a long way towards saving the environment. The shape is also interesting and fun.”
Dr. Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said: “Receiving an Australian Good Design Award is testament to embedding design excellence at the heart of a product, service, place or experience. Although 2021 continues to be another challenging year, it is incredibly inspiring to see designers and businesses working together to find innovative, customer-centric design solutions to local and global challenges and to see them recognised and rewarded for their efforts through these prestigious Awards.”
“The importance of embracing good design principles is now more important than ever as many businesses around the world have had to completely re-think their business strategies to remain competitive. The standard of design excellence represented in this year’s Awards is the best I’ve ever seen in my 25 years of running these Awards, an encouraging sign that the design sector is flourishing,” Dr. Gien went on to say.

Disposable or cloth Nappies: Is there a right choice?
The Power of Water: Why Skincare isn't right for your baby
It’s a time of big changes for both mother and baby, and it’s a period of adjustment where you get to form a bond with the new addition to your family. Here’s what you need to know about the fourth trimester, what to expect as a new parent, and how to cope:
Absolutely. The term “fourth trimester” got coined by a pediatrician named Dr. Harvey Kemp at the turn of the 21st century. In a nutshell, the fourth trimester is all about the experiences newborns have in the first 12 weeks of life outside of the womb.
It was also originally about how new mums can prevent colic in their babies. Today, it also encompasses how mothers of newborn babies cope with the new changes and demands placed on them and their lifestyles.
As you can imagine, it takes some time for newborn babies to get used to life outside of the womb. The moment they are born, the lives of newborns are transformed; they're now living in a strange and confusing environment that they will navigate in new ways.
Once their babies are born, mothers have to shift their focus and attention onto their newborns. This often leads to feeling overwhelmed during the fourth trimester. Mothers frequently feel physically and mentally drained keeping up with the demands of their babies.
Additionally, first time mothers are learning how to care for a newborn baby without any prior experience to draw upon.
What should you expect in fourth trimester?
Your newborn baby will need a lot of time, comfort, and support to get used to its new, unfamiliar surroundings and the visual presence of other people; they may not settle into a new daily routine quickly.
So how can new mothers' help newborns adjust to their new life in the fourth trimester:
Create a Sense of Safety and Security
Babies have spent the first nine months of their lives suspended inside an enclosed space. They are no longer in that space and will need time to adjust to those changes. You can help by creating a physical sense of safety and security with plenty of swaddling and swaying.
Skin-to-Skin Contact
Skin-to-skin contact is something nursing teams encourage all mothers to do with their newborn babies when possible. There’s even scientific proof to show there's a “statistically significant positive effect” on newborns with skin-to-skin contact (particularly if they are breastfed).
Feeding on Demand
It can be tempting to set up a feeding schedule for your newborn baby from the moment you arrive home from the hospital or your place of labour. However, it does makes sense to feed them on demand. Otherwise, they will be hungry and continue crying until they get a feed.
Of course, the focus isn’t just on your baby alone during the fourth trimester. The discussion surrounding the challenges and changes that mothers face during this time is extremely important to acknowledge.
As your baby’s mother, you also need help and support during this transitional period in both your life and your newborn’s life. Here’s how to get the support you need:
Firstly, if you have a partner or spouse, work as a team. Get your partner to help you with things. Having a baby be dependant on you alone, can feel like a huge weight on your shoulders. But know that you can extend your need for help to your partner can help lift that load.
For example, you can ask them to help with bedtime, bottle feeding, changing nappies, and bath time. This also gives your partner more time to bond with your baby during this crucial time in your lives.
Extra help from family and friends can also be crucial. Have you heard the saying "It takes a village"? That can really apply to raising a child 😉. Some mothers or fathers might face their parenthood journey without a partner and might look to extended family and loved ones for emotional and physcial support with things like household cleaning and getting groceries.
Finally, you need to try and take things easy. That means getting sleep whenever possible. If you have the luxury of asking a family member or friend to help watch your baby while you have a nap, don't feel guilty about asking.
You should also ensure that you eat and drink healthily to keep your energy levels up.
The emotional changes that a mother will go through are sometimes less obvious but even more powerful than the physical journey that occurs through pregnancy, labour and post birth. It's essential that mothers are aware of the emotinal aspect of the fourth trimester, voice their feelings and speak up if your feeling down.
The fourth trimester is undoubtedly a tough time for both mother and baby. But, the good news is there are some things you can do to make this period in your life easier for both you and your newborn baby

Newborns don’t recognise the difference between night and day, which contributes to their odd sleeping patterns in the beginning. Therefore, emphasising the difference between night and day is crucial in setting healthy sleeping patterns early on.
In the first six months, keep your baby’s room dark or dimly lit, and quiet at night time. If you need to attend to your baby in the night, turn on a dim light so as to not create too much of a disturbance.
It is also beneficial to be soothing and quiet when with your baby at night, and save playtime during the day so that this rest pattern can be established. Another good idea is to give night feeds in the bedroom to keep them quick and distinguish them from day feeds.
2. Put your baby to bed drowsy, but awake
This will allow your baby to associate feeling sleepy with being in bed. This will help them eventually self-soothe if they wake up in the night and cry out a little. This being said, if you hear real crying, you should attend to your baby.
3. Set a sleep routine
Babies sleep during the day as well, which can complicate the ways in which a sleep routine is set, but once again, day and night need to be distinguished.
When your baby wakes up during the day, you might offer them a feed, change their nappy, or talk, cuddle and play. However, when your baby wakes up in the night, instead focus on resettling them and getting them back to sleep.
No one said being a parent is easy, and lack of sleep seems to be a sort of rite of passage. Although it’s unavoidable to a degree, if you persist with these steps from early on in your baby’s life, it will make you and your baby a lot happier in the long run.
This can all be really overwhelming, particularly to new parents, so here is our nappy bag checklist to make your life a little bit easier:
1. Nappies, of course
Whether you choose to use cloth nappies, or disposable ones, they’re a non-negotiable necessity. You never know when a surprise nappy change is in the cards.
2. The Baby Bum Shower!
Ditch the nappy wipes - the BBS is the perfect solution to clean your baby to the highest hygiene standard without the mess of nappy wipes. Not only does it save space in your already overloaded nappy bag, but it’s sustainable and contains enough solutions for up to 10 nappy changes! Talk about a game changer.
3. Storage bags
Make sure to pack a few compostable or reused plastic bags to put dirty nappies in before they can be thrown away. This is also great in situations where dirty clothes, shoes or toys are also involved…
4. Spare change of clothes
As mentioned above, clothes can get messy in these situations, so it’s always handy to have some extra clothes in your nappy bag!
5. A changing mat
You never know when or where you will need to change your baby’s nappy, which is why it’s important to always have a changing mat with you. This will make you and your baby more comfortable.
6. A hat and sunscreen
To protect your little one’s super sensitive skin from the harsh sun.
7. A spare dummy
For when a not-so-happy baby spits their dummy on the floor of the shopping centre, and you have nowhere to clean it for when they want it again in the next 5 minutes.
8. Baby food
Whether your baby is being bottle fed, or has moved on to solids, it’s crucial to have some snacks ready to avoid a hangry baby.
]]>Disposable nappies are definitely the more convenient option. They’re quick and easy to use, and have a layer of super-absorbent chemicals that maximise dryness. They also come in a range of sizes for babies of different ages and weight.
Cloth nappies, on the other hand, are more time consuming when it comes to fastening them and washing them. A newborn needs roughly twelve nappies a day, and around six to eight for a toddler - that’s a fair bit of washing to do!
When using disposable nappies, you need to buy them regularly. This cost adds up quickly, and often increases the financial strain on new families. Cloth nappies are often the favourable alternative in this case as they can be reused once washed!
The cost involved with cloth nappies is the washing cost, depending on how often you need to wash them, your washing machine, detergent, etc.
Environmentally speaking, cloth nappies are the obvious choice. Disposable nappies contribute to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of landfill worldwide each year, and their manufacturing involves excessive use of water and energy, thus contributing to their environmental impact.
Biodegradable nappies are available, but they are more expensive and their biodegradability depends on landfill conditions. Therefore, they often don’t make much of a difference.
Cloth nappies are by far more environmentally sustainable than disposable nappies. Just be sure to employ sustainable washing practices!
In terms of performance, cloth nappies are more prone to leaks than disposable nappies with enhanced chemically absorbent properties.
This being said, cloth nappies are still effective. Using cloth nappies during the day and disposables at bedtime is a good way to ensure a dry night.
Now, in terms of baby bum health and sensitivity (our forte), the answer gets a bit trickier.
Nappy rash is caused by infrequent nappy changes, regardless of which type of nappy you choose. However, it has been found that disposable diapers actually keep your baby’s bum drier due to the super-absorbent chemicals, hence reducing the risk of nappy rash! On the other hand, these chemicals can be irritating in and of themselves, which is avoidable with cloth nappies.
In our opinion, so long as you frequently change your baby’s nappy as needed (using the BBS for amazing results, of course) your baby’s bum will likely be happy.
At the end of the day, everyone and their baby is different and has a different preference. It is often recommended to use cloth nappies at home when possible, and disposable nappies when you’re out and about with your baby. This way, you can cut costs and be more sustainable when possible, but also be efficient when you need to be!

]]>It all started with a chaotic car-park nappy change when nurse Jess realised that there had to be a better way to clean a baby’s bum without excessive wipes and extra mess.
An easy to use alternative that eliminated the mess, waste and the overall stress on parents and their babies’ sensitive skin was necessary, thus the Baby Bum Shower was born! A portable hand-held device providing a continuous stream of water for all baby and hand cleaning needs! One device holds enough water for up to 10 washes.
You simply rinse your baby’s bum with a pressurised stream of water from the device, allowing the dirty nappy to absorb excess liquid, until clean, and put on a clean nappy! Not only is it a better alternative for sensitive baby skin, but it’s environmentally friendly.
Our parent feedback so far has been extremely positive: Try the Baby Bum Shower today. We’re sure you and your baby will love it!

A journal article written by Sharon Trotter RM BSc, “Why no baby skincare product should be advertised or promoted as ‘suitable for newborn skin’” perfectly aligns with our beliefs and provides insight into the science supporting water-based cleaning methods over the use of harsh chemicals.
Trotter emphasises just how thin the neonatal skin barrier is, thus it is more permeable than that of an older baby and cannot adequately handle the irritating and drying effects of chemicals found in baby skincare products. When such detergent products are used and overused, the sulphates they contain can cause serious damage to and remove this fragile barrier.
Not only this, but excessive washing of your baby (even when just water is being used) can reduce the effectiveness of the barrier’s protective function causing irritation. Therefore, it is recommended to only wash your baby when necessary.
Trotter also highlights the best methods for neonatal skincare. Such practices include:
The Baby Bum Shower is the perfect alternative to harsh cleaning methods and products, leaving your baby and their skin happy and healthy.

Faced with a very dirty bottom and armoured with only a few baby wipes Jess was determined to find a better way! That’s when the Baby Bum Shower was born.
Since its creation the Baby Bum Shower has always been centred around ease of use, with your family's hygiene in mind. The Baby Bum Shower has been years in the making. We went from strength to strength with our prototypes, and could not be prouder of what we have accomplished, a practical and easy solution to dirty hands, feet, and bottoms.
As parents ourselves we saw that there were many ways our hygiene standards when it came to be on the go, could improve. We wanted to include soap and water in the cleaning process, finding that ‘hand washing reduces diarrhoea episodes by 30%. Poor hygiene both in the cleaning process of changing nappies and long term hygiene habits directly contribute to these statistics’ - Ejemot-Nwadiaro et al. We have all been caught out one time or another at a picnic spot or carpark with no public toilets in sight, and after those dreaded explosions (yes you know the ones), hand washing is ESSENTIAL...enter the Baby Bum Shower.
When it comes to nappy wipes and alcohol hand gels there could be potential irritants involved not to mention that hand gels do not remove residue...which we can all agree is an important part of the process. Because sometimes you really just need water.
For us the Baby Bum Shower was created to allow all families to have the best hygiene standards wherever they are in their busy routine, and to keep their little one safe from harsh irritants, poor hygiene standards, and create a greener world for their future.
We could not be prouder of our brain child, and sharing it with you all, our community has us grinning from ear to ear!

]]>These days, parents have a wealth of hygiene products and accessories at their disposal when carrying out nappy changes. Such products make life easier for parents and aim to keep babies calm and relaxed.
The reason why parents do nappy changes will always remain the same; it’s the way they get done that is different. Here is some practical advice on how to change a nappy that will make the experience for you more straightforward and efficient.
All parents will gently lay their babies down on a flat surface such as a changing table or mat to facilitate the task. But after that is when things differ. So, which way is the right way?
The Raising Children Network Australia website recommends using wipes, a damp washcloth or damp cotton wool to clean your baby’s bottom. Their site also suggests using nappy cream before putting on a new nappy.
In the United States, the American Association of Pediatrics suggests using disposable wipes to clean a baby’s bottom and genitals. It's guidance also recommends using any ‘necessary’ nappy creams before fitting a new nappy to the baby.
From the above examples, the main difference is down to the things parents use to wipe down their babies. Both countries’ official advice is to use baby wipes, although the Australian advice also gives alternatives such as cloths or damp cotton wool.
Nappy rash is a common skin complaint found in babies that is caused by various reasons. Examples include soiled nappies (dry urine and faeces on the skin) and baby wipes with irritants in the ingredients such as alcohol.
You can look after your baby’s skin by using a gentle soap and water solution when cleaning them. Next, air dry or gently pat down your baby’s skin, and then use a barrier cream. Following those crucial steps will reduce nappy rash.
It’s crucial to maintain high levels of hygiene for both your baby and yourself. During each nappy change, you should ensure that your baby’s bottom and genitals are clean, dry, and free of any debris to reduce nappy rash and the risk of infections.
Similarly, after changing your baby’s nappy, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Human faeces contain germs and bacteria that can quickly spread and cause gastrointestinal infections and diarrhoea.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends washing your hands with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds.
Did you know that you can use one solution for both cleaning your baby and washing your hands? Baby Bum Shower enables parents to have an accessible source of water and soap in a compact form.
]]>A person’s hands are the main pathways for germ transmission. Because of that fact, the World Health Organisation recommends that everyone washes their hands for 20 to 30 seconds.
As you do things throughout the day, you’ll notice that your hands begin to get visibly soiled from the surfaces you touch. Everyone touches all kinds of surfaces hundreds of times each day, and so the chances of germ and bacteria transferral to your hands are high.
Most people get told how they should wash their hands with soap and water several times a day from a young age. But, what happens if you don’t wash your hands frequently or even at all? Is poor hand hygiene really that bad for you?
It’ll come as no surprise that your hands will become contaminated with microscopic germs and bacteria that can cause harm to human health. For example, faeces contain salmonella, E. coli, and norovirus. A single gram of human faeces can contain one trillion germs.
Here are some interesting facts about how washing your hands with soap and water can reduce your chances of getting ill, including how it can reduce gastro illnesses:
By now, you’ll have determined that washing your hands with soap and water significantly cuts down your risk of contracting certain diseases and infections. But, how exactly does washing your hands with soap and water help keep you healthy?
When you lather your hands with soap, the process mechanically removes germs from your skin. It’s not just enough to use water alone, because soap helps remove things like grease and oil from your hands that could harbour germs.
Some people might assume that using antibacterial soap kills germs. But, in reality, washing your hands with any non-antibacterial soap is just as effective at cleaning your hands.
People will often find themselves in situations where they have no access to hand washing facilities, such as when they’re travelling somewhere. In those cases, it makes sense to use a portable solution to clean your hands.
One option is to use an alcohol gel or wipes. However, the problem with that idea is alcohol isn’t as effective as soap and water - especially when you’ve got heavily soiled hands. To solve that problem, you can use a portable hand washing solution like Baby Bum Shower.
The great thing about Baby Bum Shower is that it’s a small handheld device that provides soap and water on the go. It holds enough soap and water solution for ten uses - an ideal solution to reduce hand bacteria when there are no hand washing facilities.
]]>But your partner and crime in all this IS your partner, it’s both of you against the world, but here are a few tips on how to keep the band together when it all starts to get a little too much.
Appreciate each other
Making sure that even when everything is covered in something that resembles food or the more digested kind, take the time to thank your partner for the little things that they do in the day for you, even if it is as simple as putting a load of washing on, these small acts that go unnoticed are will create an environment of gratitude and thankfulness (we know it sounds silly but sometimes it really is that simple).
Talk it out
We know you know the saying communication is key but effective communication can bring what seem like big issues down to scale when we talk about them out loud. When we say out loud we don’t mean volume though either. Having calm conversations with your partner about what is on your mind, is the best way to create an environment for healthy conversation, even if that means writing a few things down so you own your feelings, and stay specific. Word to the wise try and steer clear of criticism based communication, it’s better in the long run we promise.
Find time to connect with each other
Finding time to connect just the two of you is the hardest part of new parenthood, we aren’t even talking candles, or fancy restaurants, maybe just a cup of coffee together on a Sunday and chatting about your week. Newborn life means you don’t have all the time in the world for yourself or each other, but finding time to do things either together or sometimes just you can help.
We know these aren't magic fixes, but they are small little tips that can sometimes make all the difference when you and your partner are feeling the strain of parenthood, deep breaths you BOTH have got this!
]]>Now don’t run to get your notepad we promise we are keeping it simple! pH has levels from acidic to alkaline (queue flashback to when you thought alkaline water would cure your every ailment). When we talk about an adult's skin we lean onto the more acidic side (4-6), which comes from our skin over time building up protection from bacteria pollution etc etc. Now it will come as no shock that due to our babies status as newer to this world that their levels are a little different. Most babies have a level that is closer to neutral (7 and up), this will decline as they grow and their skin builds up defences to their environment.
So in short pH levels help our skin to stay protected against outside factors, like pollution and bacteria. For our babies, because their skin is THREE TIMES THINNER (yes you heard us right) than adult skin they do not have adequate barrier protection to keep their skin safe from outside factors. Scary as this may sound, we can do A LOT to help our babies skin!
Not using anything with high pH levels is a great start as it will dry out your baby's skin and can lead to irritation/infection, using pH neutral cleansers and moisturisers like we recommend to use with the BBS are a great for our soft baby skin. Another great step is not picking up your nappy wipes and instead reaching for your Baby Bum Shower, filled with your favourite pH neutral cleanser, baby wipes are not always pH neutral and can cause irritation, so transitioning to a BBS can be a good move if we are starting to think about our baby’s skin health (not to mention hygiene health) read about that here.
Stepping away from soap and harsh baby cleaning products is the first step in creating a great environment for your baby's skin to thrive, just make sure you’re always looking for pH neutral level cleansers and moisturisers. Our babies just like us need a skincare routine that is gentle and safe to set them up for the best start in life!
]]>Keeping the bath JUST RIGHT
Before we settle in for our bedtime story, we run a bath for our bub making sure they are nice and clean from the day's adventures. Creating the perfect bath temperature is important in maintaining our baby's skin's natural state, and not allowing our precious bubs to dry out which can create skin issues such as irritation and flaking. Due to the delicate nature of their skin bathing too frequently or too long can really irritate their little bodies (poor things!). A 5-10 minute bath is MORE than enough for our little bubs to be clean, fresh, and most importantly safe, now if you want us to get technical 37 degrees is a good starting point, warm but not hot. HOT TIP If the thought of bending over a bathtub to bathe the babe sounds like pulling teeth (we have all been there) Baby Bum Shower is a great alternative and can be used as a quick ‘bird bath solution’.
Soap is a no-no
Most soaps are filled with irritants, that can cause all those awful things we want to avoid for our babies, so it’s best to just AVOID. Grab your baby friendly alternatives such as a gentle pH-neutral cleanser (much like the ones we recommend to use in the BBS). These gentle cleansers will clean your babies skin and also nurture it at the same time (win win).
As we like to air on the side of caution make sure that you patch test your new cleanser first. You can patch test the area by putting the product on a small area of your baby's skin and waiting a day to see if there is a reaction. Just like us babies are cut from different cloths so we need to make sure that each product we choose is safe for OUR bub.
Stitches that don’t itch
We want those cute insta snaps just like every other mother who is obsessed with the cuteness that is her baby (don’t look at our camera roll) but making sure what we put our baby in from day to night is safe and soft is of definite importance. From towels to clothes, soft is best, and make sure to leave a little wiggly room, because tight clothes can create rashes and no one enjoys those. And last but not least baby friendly detergent, your best friend when it comes to washing everyday (cough cough three times a day) for your beautiful baby, and the never ending cycle that is laundry.
]]>Being a mum is a full time job (and then some), so taking time for yourself normally drops further and further down your to do list as the days go on. Self-care as we have learnt throughout 2020 can sometimes be the difference between a stressful day, and a day where you take 10 minutes for yourself, to turn your outlook for the rest of the day a little bit brighter and even a little more, dare we say calm?!
Let’s start with some easy ones that you can do at home while bub is occupied for a moment?
All our micro self-care tips are great for your day to day routine, that will help keep you in great mental and also physical health.
Now if you have some time to yourself to go on a self-care adventure (we know not likely but let’s dream), why not take yourself out for a coffee, and meet a friend, or go to a yoga class. Even taking some time for the O.G self-care acts of a relaxing massage or even a manicure/pedicure, these little acts of self-care make a huge difference when we look after ourselves, we look after our family.
We are an example for our children, so why not be a good one! Creating a self-care routine, will show our children how to look after themselves in stressful situations, and that taking time for themselves isn’t selfish, which in our fast paced world is invaluable!
]]>At Baby Bum Shower we are all about clean, easy, and sustainable, it’s what we strive for and we want to share it with you!
In a world where hand sanitiser is King (or Queen), it’s hard to see anything else as an option when it comes to cleaning your hands on the go, but let’s break this down.
Unlike your Baby Bum Shower your handy little bottled sanitiser’s shelf life has no longevity. When we take a look at our alcohol based sanitisers it starts to get a little chemical, the product is alcohol based (and not the fun kind), stripping your skin of its natural oils, causing cracking and drying that can offer germs an entry point below your skin barrier causing infection.
That’s why the Baby Bum Shower is such a god send! Not only is it easy, clean AND sustainable, but it’s safe emollient cleanser cleans off all debris (we won’t get into it but you can imagine), and safely sanitises your hands while not creating landfill, or hurting your natural skin barrier.
When it comes to which one we would rather use in a tight spot, The Baby Bum Shower offers an opportunity, to deep clean your hands with a safe cleanser and water. The Baby Bum Shower is extremely durable, and can take whatever life can throw at it, unlike your hand sanitiser that normally only lasts a month at best!
Take a look at the video on our website, to see how The Baby Bum Shower works, and how it is your new on the go cleaning staple.
]]>Issues of infection for both us and our babies are a high possibility when we aren’t using best hygiene practices, that’s where products such as the Baby Bum Shower come in, they can help eradicate these occurrences, PHEW!
With the possibility of contamination from changing nappies without proper hand hygiene, there's a chance of infections such as diarrhoea.
And that's just our health when changing nappies!
For our children there poses a threat to skin irritations such as dermatitis if the area is not properly cleaned during the changing process, which we can’t always guarantee when we are out in the big world with our bub and our nappy bag holding maybe only a few baby wipes.
Diaper dermatitis happens to about 50-65% of babies throughout their time in nappies, so prevention is key! Using products like the Baby Bum Shower that has your chosen a neutral pH balanced emollient based wash within it to effectively clean your baby's skin but also yours, is a key step to keeping hygiene standards high.
The Baby Bum Shower effectively makes all hygiene issues a thing of the past!
